A data centre may be a place to store data cabinets and server racks, but the growth of such facilities means that their design is becoming increasingly interesting.
There is already a data centre in Sweden which is designed to look like a space station and now reports suggest an American facility is being built based upon a mansion.
Keith Waters & Associates, which traditionally builds homes, has signed a contract to build a 36,311-sq-ft data centre in Minneapolis, reports Data Centre Dynamics.
It is thought that the data centre, which will be managed by FiberPop, is being designed to look like a house because of its location in a residential area.
Originally local residents were concerned about the development but have been appeased by the sympathetic design.
There are a number of unique data centres across the globe, and as demand for such facilities rises there are likely to be even more in the coming years.
Notable examples include the Iron Mountain 'bunker' in Pennsylvania and the carbon neutral EvoSwitch in the Netherlands.
