Cloud 'adds to demand for data centres' - Data and Server Racks

Cloud 'adds to demand for data centres' - Data and Server RacksThe increasing use of cloud computing technology by companies and individuals is leading to a rising demand for data centres, an expert has stated.

In an article for Financial Director, Rob Edwards - who holds this position for Next Generation Data - noted that a facility with server racks could earn up to £200 per square foot.

He suggested that in order to get a good return on investment, those setting up their own data centre need to build one that is at least 20,000 sq ft, which he said requires up to £20 million in funding.

However, the expert noted that it can be a profitable sector to be in and that cloud computing means there is likely to be a sustained need for facilities with data cabinets.

"The emergence of cloud computing, which by definition can be hosted almost anywhere, can only add to the demand for safer, cheaper and more remote data centres," Mr Edwards stated.

According to the DatacentreDynamics Industry Census 2011, the global market for data centre hardware is likely to rise above the $35 billion (£22 billion) mark by September 2012.
