Companies hoping to reduce their carbon footprint and their energy bills have been advised to look to those responsible for overseeing their server racks and other IT equipment.
Mark Greenlaw, vice-president of sustainability and educational affairs at consultancy firm Cognizant, said in an article for BusinessGreen that chief information officers (CIOs) should form sustainability reports and track the progress of eco-friendly initiatives.
"Using the tools and expertise of this naturally tech-savvy department, companies can appeal to the needs of all its stake-holders," he stated.
The expert observed that this could enhance the social impact of firms, reduce their carbon footprints and costs, and improve efficiency.
Mr Greenlaw suggested that CIOs could cut down on the number of data cabinets and servers needed if they rationalise their application portfolios.
This week, the Yorkshire Post reported that InTechnology is considering creating a data centre that is powered solely on household waste.
