Cabling manufacturers continue to warn that every aspect of a data centre's infrastructure can impact on the facilities carbon footprint, it has been reported.
According to ZDNet's Heather Clancy, the issue of green cabling is more important than ever as more firms look to upgrade their networks to 100G Ethernet.
She gives the example of Corning Cable Systems' decision to introduce its Pretium Evolved-Density Growth-Enabled (Edge) solutions.
Bob Pollock, director of marketing for Corning, said the Pretium line of fibre optic leads has good green credentials because they take up a lot less space than traditional fibre optic cables up to 30 per cent less.
And because they are made from fibre, less heat is generated than if they were standard Cat5 or Cat6 cables made from copper.
Ram Rao, product marketing manager for active optical cables at Zarlink Semiconductor, claimed that more businesses will adopt fibre optic cabling solutions in the future because they provide greater bandwidth and more flexibility.
