A UK broadband provider appears set to make a significant investment in IT infrastructure such as server racks and data cabinets.
Zen Internet is to spend £4 million on a new purpose-built data centre at its Greater Manchester headquarters, reports the Rochdale News.
Andrew Saunders, head of product management and marketing at the firm, said the investment was needed in light of the ongoing industry shift towards cloud computing.
As this trend continues to gather momentum and businesses become increasingly reliant on IT systems to function, he claimed it has "never been more important" to ensure critical applications are hosted in a dedicated, energy efficient data centre.
"This provides a secure, temperature controlled environment, which has access to reliable, resilient power and connectivity," Mr Saunders added.
He noted that the new data centre will meet increasing demand for hosting services from Zen's existing customers.
Last month, leading pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca outsourced control of its data centre operations to HCL Technologies.
