Data centres around the world can save money simply by turning the temperature gauge up, it has been claimed.
Intel says data centres can save four per cent in energy costs for every 1ºC they increase the heat.
The firm believes the cooling equipment used to prevent the contents of data cabinets and server racks from overheating is leading to high electricity bills for businesses.
At present, the majority of European businesses run data centres at a temperature of between 19 and 21ºC in order to avoid creating server room hotspots, reports Techworld.
These can cause equipment to malfunction, which could potentially cause the firm to spend money on repairs or even new hardware.
However, Intel believes a middle ground can be found, with both Facebook and Microsoft already saving hundreds of thousands by increasing the temperature by between two and 4ºC.
Richard George, director of cloud services at Intel, told Techworld that reducing data centre energy consumption will reduce the need to build more power stations.
