Recession turning data centres green - Server Room Monitoring

Recession turning data centres green - Server Room MonitoringServer room operators attempting to cut running costs during the recession are looking into technologies which may help them improve their energy efficiency.

According to research by Frost & Sullivan, green IT initiatives such as improving the efficiency of server rack cooling have sprung up because of tightening budgets.

The company found that data centres are using technologies such as virtualisation, cloud computing and power management techniques in order to bring down operation costs, which inadvertently are good for the environment.

Gaurav Sundararaman, analyst with the firm, said: "Industry leaders should channel R&D efforts towards the development of cost-effective green technologies that are affordable for data centre owners. Consortiums can take assistance from university researchers to develop low-cost green techniques that improve the energy efficiency of data centres."

Ed Sperling recently wrote for Low-Power Engineering Community that in the past, major companies focused on increasing power to get a greater performance, but this has been replaced by emphasis on consumption reduction.
