Server racks and cabinets full to the brim with the latest technology can prove to be a challenge when it comes to cooling, it has been claimed.
Many vendors are creating servers that require 40kW of cooling per rack, and an average data centre is designed to give just 2kW of cooling per server cabinet, according to ameinfo.com.
According to the news provider, while blade servers can promise lower power consumption per unit, because they only take up one unit of cabinet space cooling can soon become a problem.
Hotspots can occur in some situations which are likely to shorten the life of network equipment.
"It is unlikely that a traditional data center, with computer room air conditioning units supplying airflow through a raised-floor plenum, will be able to deliver a cooling capacity of more than 3kW to any rack," the website stated.
However, the tech-news site added that some manufacturers are starting to create server racks that offer upwards of 10kW of cooling power.
According to 42U, picking the right server rack should be a top priority for IT businesses.
