Next-gen server design reduces energy consumption - Server Cabinets & Server Racks The latest network equipment is helping to push down data centre operating costs, it has been claimed.

According to IT expert Jim Docherty, reduced energy usage is a good way for IT businesses to drive down their expenditure.

Docherty, managing director of KACE's Europe, the Middle East and Africa operation told Public Technology: "The 'always-on' culture that is emerging has little regard for the consequences of accessing those services – both in terms of cost and carbon emissions."

He added that recent advances in data storage and server rack cooling technology are helping to reduce the amount of power that is used in their IT departments.

Mr Docherty also claimed that virtualisation and blade servers are also doing their bit to reduce firms' energy burden.

Recently, Diane Bryant, Intel's chief information officer, said the firm has reduced its energy consumption by consolidating its 147 data centres.

It is hoping to save £160 million over the next eight years.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19437988-ADNFCR
