A modular approach to data centre construction will ensure that facilities can be easily upgraded and future-proofed, it has been claimed.
According to IT analyst Gartner, in the past businesses would buy up large amounts of floor space for their server racks and data storage cabinets and as a result many data centres are now sparsely populated.
"Newly-built data centres often opened with huge areas of white floor space, fully powered and backed by an uninterruptible power supply, water and air-cooled and mostly empty," Gartner claims.
However, the firm claims that constructing facilities to a five or seven-year shelf-life plan is sufficient.
Recently, Gartner claimed that there were a number of simple measures that firms could take to reduce the cost of their data centre operations including using virtualisation or consolidating IT hardware on a single site.
The firm claimed that driving forward with cost reductions was the only way to maintain the increasing level of service expected by firms on a limited budget.
