Microsoft set to 'load servers in shipping containers'

Microsoft set to 'load servers in shipping containers'Microsoft is set to debut a new approach in a Chicago-area data centre later this year when it receives its first shipment of servers, which will arrive already networked together in a sealed container.

ZDNet.co.uk reported that in an interview with its sister site, CNET News.com, chief software architect Ray Ozzie said the process by which servers are now delivered is much simpler.

"The trucks back them in, rack them and stack them", he said.

Each sealed container contains a number of data and server racks, the news site explained. The containers remain sealed and are replaced once a certain number of servers have failed.

A new container of servers can then be loaded in, while the others are returned to the manufacturer.

Microsoft's general manager of infrastucture, Arne Josefsberg, stated that the new solution could help to improve Microsoft's energy efficiency through better management of heat.

A recently-released white paper from Microsoft details the new features and technologies introduced with Windows Server 2008, including several that help minimise environmental by-products and cut down power consumption.
