Make server racks greener, says Greenpeace - Data and server racks

Make server racks greener, says Greenpeace - Data and server racksGreenpeace is calling on major internet networking companies to do more to cut their carbon emissions from data centres and to use renewable energy.

With the rise of cloud computing and increasing numbers of people taking advantage of services such as Facebook and Twitter, companies are having to build giant data centres to meet the network demands.

However, according to Greenpeace, this means that, in 2020, server racks in data centres will consume 1,963 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, greater than the current electricity consumption of France, Germany, Canada and Brazil combined.

The organisation added: "We are calling on IT industry giants to put their might behind government policies that give priority grid access for renewable sources like wind and solar energy.

"IT companies should also support economy-wide climate and energy policies around the world that peak climate emissions by 2015."

On e-solution may be the use of fuel cell technology, which has recently been tested by Google in some of its data centres.
