IT firms urged to act on energy efficiency - Data and Server Racks

IT firms urged to act on energy efficiency - Data and Server RacksWith the registration deadline for the government's CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme fast approaching, IT companies are being urged to act.

Consultancy firm Greenocity said awareness of the legislation within the IT sector is "almost non-existent" even though firms could face fines if they fail to sign up.

The scheme is aimed at improving energy efficiency and cutting carbon emissions among the UK's large public and private sector organisations.

Together, those covered by the CRC are responsible for around ten per cent of the UK's total emissions.

Greenocity pointed out that IT firms consume large amounts of energy and have substantial carbon footprints thanks to their heating and cooling, lighting and general power consumption needs.

It said that in many server rooms, around 150 per cent more energy is required to cool heat generated among the server racks than to actually power the servers.

Tony Fisher, managing director of the organisation, said: "It is shocking that awareness of the CRC scheme among IT professionals is virtually nonexistent.

"Without IT involvement, organisations will miss vital opportunities to reduce their energy bills, reduce their CO2 emissions and increase their profits."
