Intel takes server share from AMD - Data and Server Racks

Intel takes server share from AMD - Data and Server RacksIt already had most of the market for server processor units, but Intel has now taken an even bigger share.

The technology giant finished the second quarter of 2010 with 93.5 per cent of the server market, figures from IDC show.

This was an increase on the 89.9 per cent share it enjoyed during the same quarter of 2009.

As a result, AMD's share dropped from 10.1 per cent to just 6.5 per cent.

Speaking to the IDG News Service, IDC analyst Shane Rau explained how the shift occurred during the year.

"Intel got significant sales traction for its new 32 nanometer Xeon DP products, formerly code-named Westmere-EP, and for its 45 nanometer Xeon MP products, formerly code-named Nehalem-EX," he remarked.

"In contrast, while AMD launched its 8-core and 12-core Opteron products, formerly code-named Magny Cours, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) didn't buy them and ship them in significant volume."

However, AMD did manage to steal market share from Intel in the laptop sector, even though Intel remains by far the biggest player.
