Improve data centre efficiency, firms urged - Data & Server RacksBusinesses need to increase energy efficiency in the data centre environment, it has been claimed.

Alan Beresford, managing director at EcoCooling.org, said businesses need to think about how much electricity they consume powering and cooling server racks and data cabinets.

Too often businesses fail to consolidate data and storage equipment, meaning they end up paying higher bills than necessary, he stated.

"If you look at your energy and your data footprint - the normal significance of energy use is the actual IT equipment. The server, storage [and] communications equipment takes the most amount of electricity - and after that comes cooling," Mr Beresford stated.

He claimed businesses should be looking to take advantage of server virtualisation, which allows them to move their processing around physical machines.

"Why have half a dozen one-amp server racks churning away, when you might get away with one full of efficient, high-capacity, modern equipment which is virtualised," he asked.

According to IDC, server virtualisation is the number one priority for chief information officers in 2012.
