IBM 'seeks to fend off Cisco servers' - Data & Server Racks

IBM 'seeks to fend off Cisco servers' - Data & Server RacksNetwork equipment giant Cisco faces stern competition as it bids to gain server market share, it has been claimed.

Writing for Gigaom.com, Stacey Higginbotham explained that IBM is refusing to lie down and accept another entrant into its area of expertise.

She noted that the firm has teamed up with NEC to deliver an OpenFlow-based controller-and-switch solution in a bid to increase the appeal of its data centre offerings.

"Using the protocol, [users] can create a programmable network that is abstracted from the physical hardware underneath - a so-called software-defined network," Ms Higginbotham stated.

She explained that Stanford University, data provider Tervela and financial information provider Selerity are among the early adopters for the solution.

Last month, HP announces plans to claim market share away from Cisco in the global switches market during 2012.
