Gartner claims server rack efficiency should be top priority - Server Cabinets & Server Racks

Gartner claims server rack efficiency should be top priority - Server Cabinets & Server Racks Data centre operators should make energy efficiency a top priority, according to IT analyst Gartner.

According to the firm, as operating costs increase and environmental legislation gets more stringent companies will have to focus on cutting their power consumption, reports eWeek Europe.

Rakesh Kumar, research vice president at Gartner, said that data centre operators are not paying enough attention to server room monitoring of energy use, the news provider states.

"They need to realise that removing a single x86 server from a data center will result in savings of more than £240 a year in energy costs alone," he claimed.

Mr Kumar added: "This involves taking out those systems that are underutilised or old, or where the workload can be run on more-efficient hardware."

Server rack consolidation has been something Gartner has promoted in the past and the firm previously suggested that firms could save money virtualising their network equipment or by simply consolidating its server cabinets on a single site.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19479328-ADNFCR
