Firms face larger fines for data breaches - Data and Server Racks

Firms face larger fines for data breaches - Data and Server RacksEuropean businesses could soon face heftier fines for data security breaches, it has been reported.

According to the Financial Times, the European Commission has drafted new regulations governing data protection across the 27-member state EU.

Should reforms be pushed through, Brussels would have the power to fine private companies up to five per cent of their global turnover as a penalty for failing to keep data secure.

David Gibson, director of technical services at Varonis Systems, has backed the plan, claiming that reforms are "long overdue" in this field.

He urged businesses to deliver the necessary security defences before it is too late - and this may involve further investment in the data centre.

Companies need to have effective data protection processes in place, but also ensure that data cabinets and computer cabinets are fully secure.

A data security breach has the potential not only to cause serious damage to a company's reputation, but also wipe out a large proportion of its profits for the year.
