An expert in data centre management has offered some tip tips on how to keep data centres cool during the warm summer months.
Julius Neudorfer, director of Network Services for North American Access Technologies, told eWeek that data centre cooling systems can reach their limits when the weather is hot.
"Many IT departments are sweating out the summer, hoping that they will not have servers suddenly crashing from over-temperature shutdowns," he stated.
Simple measures, such as making sure any unused space in front of server racks are blocked off to prevent hot air from recirculating and evenly distributing heat loads into every server rack to avoid hot spots can have a big impact, Mr Neudorfer said.
Basic duct work to ensure that cool air outlets are located over the front of the server racks and the return ducts are located over the rear can also help.
He pointed out that such tips may not completely solve the problem of data centre overheating, but they may help IT departments get through the summer months.
