2011 was the year the data centre turned green, it has been claimed.
Writing for Wired Enterprise, Eric Smalley suggested that data centre managers are no longer simply concerned with which server racks and data cabinets to use.
Last year saw an increasing focus placed on the environment and energy consumption in particular, he suggested.
Mr Smalley said the data centre boom has come at a time of high energy prices and heightened concern about carbon emissions.
"The days of cramming truckloads of servers into a room and firing up a bunch of industrial air-conditioners to cool them are over," he noted.
"Data centre operators are gaining control of their energy bills and earning green points by increasing efficiency, from server processor chips to warehouse-size buildings."
Mr Smalley commented that the major internet players - including Google, Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Yahoo, and Apple - are leading the way where data centre efficiency is concerned.
These online giants are finding ways to use greener energy and get more out of the energy they use.
