The best way to move data centre is to build a new site and migrate virtual machines from to the other, it has been claimed.
Writing for Infoworld, Paul Venezia explained that this is possible by creating high-bandwidth links between the two sites - however this approach can be expensive.
"This assumes a fully virtualised infrastructure and a massive budget since you're duplicating the whole thing at the new site," he noted.
But this approach has its rewards, as the company suffers no downtime and there are fewer risks of a data mishap, Mr Venezia said.
Another way of moving is to simply shut down for a day and manually move server racks and data cabinets from one site to the next, he said.
"With the 'kitchen sink' approach, the new data centre is provided with power and cooling only and everything is moved from one site to the other: racks, servers, network, storage, the whole shebang," Mr Venezia stated.
"This is the cheapest method, but is also necessarily the hardest and longest process of all."
