Data centres to help heat homes - Data and Server Racks

Data centres to help heat homes - Data and Server RacksServer racks could be set to become an in-home accessory if researchers at the University of Virginia and Microsoft get their way.

According to the team, the massive heat produced by data centres could be utilised in people's homes to help keep them warm, acting as a "data furnace".

They added that any home with a broadband connection has the capability to become a micro data centre, all that would be required is a cabinet filled with servers to be installed instead of a furnace.

The team suggested that around 110 motherboards would generate the same heat as a conventional home heating system during the winter months.

In warmer periods, the excess heat could be released using a vent.

However, homeowners should not expect to have their property turned into a data centre in the immediate future as it is likely the idea would first be trialled in offices.

Data centres are renowned for using lots of energy with Google revealing it uses the same as 200,000 homes, it is thought 'data furnaces' could help cut down on the amount that is wasted.
