The biggest challenge facing data centre managers today is how to keep cooling costs per server rack down, according to one expert.
Ed Sperling wrote for Low-Power Engineering Community that in the past, major companies focused on increasing power to get a greater performance, but this has been replaced by emphasis on consumption reduction.
Mr Sperling claimed that large collections of server racks in data centres meant that systems were often run inefficiently, especially as cooling mechanisms had to be operated as well as the servers.
He predicted that servers will now be reduced to single machines to reduce cooling costs.
"After decades of arguing for centralized control as the most efficient way of using resources, many data centre managers are finding it's also the most efficient way to use power," he explained.
However, Graybar IT specialist Karl Griffith recently wrote for Cabling Network Systems that the most difficult obstacle to overcome will be keeping operating costs down in the wake of rising energy prices.
