Hertford Regional College's server racks will be kept cool naturally after it relocated its storage to an Iceland-based data centre.
According to a report in the Guardian, the college has set up a framework agreement with Thor Data Center in Hafnafjordur which will see it providing storage and a platform for running various applications.
Speaking to the newspaper, Daniel Hidlebaugh, the college's chief technology officer, said that the move was prompted by the need to be green while also making cost savings.
"By moving it out it helps us to go green because their data centre is carbon neutral, it saves us from drawing on the power grid in the UK, and it gives us long term stability in power," he added.
The Thor facility is run using geothermal energy and also does not need any artificial cooing due to the extreme temperatures.
Social media giant Facebook recently opened its first data centre outside of the UK in Luleaa in Sweden.
