Apple and Facebook to store data in Prineville - Data & Server Racks

Apple and Facebook to store data in Prineville - Data & Server RacksTwo of the world's biggest IT companies are set to house data cabinets and server racks within a stone's throw of each other.

Manufacturing giant Apple has bought 160 acres of land in Prineville, Oregon, and plans to build a super-size data centre in the town.

Prineville - where temperatures have not risen above 105 degrees Fahrenheit in the last half-century - is already home to a major Facebook data centre.

Jay Park, Facebook’s director of data centre engineering, described the town as an "ideal location for evaporative cooling".

With temperatures remaining relatively low in summer, companies running data centres need to spend less on cooling technologies for their server farms.

Rather than make a significant investment in such equipment, they may simply use server room monitoring solutions to ensure business continuity.

Apple currently operates a 500,000 square foot data centre in Maiden, North Carolina, which supports the firm's new iCloud service.
