Study sheds light on server room CO2 output - Data and Server Racks

Study sheds light on server room CO2 output - Data and Server RacksCompanies may be encouraged to invest in greener server accessories after hearing the results of a new survey on CO2 emissions.

Kell Systems has calculated that the average office server room currently consumers 40,296 kilowatts of electricity a year.

This equates to an annual CO2 output of 27.7 tonnes, or 21,760 kilograms.

Using statistics from the Tufts University Office of Sustainability, it worked out that 3,414 trees would be needed to offset these emissions.

It would take just one tree more than 4,000 years to break down the yearly CO2 output of just a single server room.

John MacDonald, joint managing director at Kell Systems, said the figures highlight the "tremendous waste" that goes into the operation of servers.

"With energy costs rising this is not just an environmental but also an economic waste for businesses," he remarked.

Mr MacDonald predicted that businesses will be increasingly looking at ways to reduce their server room emissions through increased temperatures and alternatives such as external server cabinets.
