Environmentally friendly IT processes 'could be cost-effective' - Cabinet Accessories

Environmentally friendly IT processes 'could be cost-effective' - Cabinet Accessories Environmentally friendly IT technology could increase initial capital outlay but may well be cost-effective down the line, Ultraspeed has stated.

According to Michael Shanks, chief technology officer at the company, two areas of spending - capital and operational expenditure - must be considered when it comes to eco friendly IT processes.

"Yes, capital expenditure will increase, lower power parts are niche parts in the industry and therefore cost more - even using 8GB sticks of ram is more expensive than 4GB but can use 40 per cent less power overall," he noted.

"Building the correct strategy for your IT expenditure can see initial investments being higher, however if you plan accordingly and virtualise, you can use less equipment, less power and less cooling.

As a result, total cost of ownership over five years could actually be less, Mr Shanks added.

His comments came after Ethical IT noted that reusing and recycling IT equipment in the UK will stop it from polluting waste areas in developing countries.
