Managing power costs in the IT sector is like mud wrestling, it has been claimed.
According to the National Computing Centre, despite power management being a slippery business, there has never been a greater impetus to install green network equipment.
The obvious place to start improving energy efficiency is at the heart of many IT firms business the data centre.
"In terms of energy consumption data centres can be like black holes, voraciously gobbling up huge quantities of power with a seemingly infinite appetite," the NCC states.
Simulating data centre airflow around server racks and server cabinets can show where improvements can be made either in rack design itself or in air conditioning.
The website claims that using power saving software can also have a large impact on energy consumption by powering down idle hard drives.
In related news, Lockerbie in Scotland could end up housing Europe's largest data centre.
