Over-cooling is a 'waste of money' - Open Rack Systems

Over-cooling is a 'waste of money' - Open Rack Systems Businesses have been warned not to waste money on over-cooling the server racks and server cabinets.

According to Sun Microsystems, firms could be throwing money away by operating too many data rack fans.

The firm claims that reducing the number of devices used to cool a data storage facility, or ensuring that they are used intermittently, can also increase the lifespan of the technology.

Phil Morris, chief technologist for Sun's data centre efficiency practice, said: "Fans are a big part of the power budget in many data centres, taking as much as 20 per cent of the total power of the system."

"Overclocking those fans - making them run too fast - is a big waste of energy," he added.

Mr Morris noted that the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers has recommended that data centres maintain an input temperature of 40 degrees C – much higher than many firms operate at.

Jeff Powers, service product manager at Emerson Network Power Service, claimed that companies should carry out regular cooling assessments in their data centres.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19357089-ADNFCR
