The consolidation of firm's data centre network equipment is being driven by the need for lower power consumption coupled with improved cooling efficiency in server racks and server cabinets, it has been claimed.
According to Data Centre Dynamics, modern cooling solutions operate at between 95 and 98 per cent efficiency, compared with just 80 per cent for older equipment.
"In some instances, it is more cost effective for companies to write off unrealised depreciation in order to receive the benefits of the newer efficiencies," the network news provider states.
Meanwhile, simple steps such as removing abandoned RJ45 leads and Cat6 cables, which can prevent the effective circulation of air, can help improve air flow around a data centre.
In related news, the Dell'Oro Group expects 10Gbit Ethernet over standard copper cabling to grow by 42 per cent by 2010.
The claim follows a statement by the firm which claimed that the IP telephony equipment sector is set to rebound in 2010.
