A new state of the art data centre in Teesside uses 'free cooling', the first of its kind to do so in the UK, it has been reported.
The data centre, which houses more than 7,000 computers in server racks and server cabinets, has been designed so that cold air can be directed around the facility, cooling network equipment and reducing the building's carbon footprint, according to cnplus.co.uk.
According to EDS, the new technology will result in an annual energy bill saving of 40 per cent when compared with standard data centre designs, the website reports.
The facility in Wynyard, near Billingham, will be located on the Teesside business park.
Eight 2.6-metre variable speed fans have been installed in each of the facility's departments to supply cool air and a further eight will be used to extract warm air.
There are a total of 64 fans in the facility.
Recently Iceotope unveiled a revolutionary new cooling technology at the Supercomputing 2009 event in the US which uses component level refrigeration.
