Web users 'want fibre optic cables' - Networking Industry NewsHalf of broadband users think that in the future the UK's internet connectivity should be provided by fibre optic cables.

A study by ISPreview.co.uk highlights that over half of 400 web users surveyed think that the government should support the spread of next-generation cables across the UK in order to help meet its target of universal 2MB broadband.

Mark Jackson, founder and editor of ISPreview UK, said: "It is clear from the results that consumers do not wish to be short-changed by expensive, unreliable or inflexible 'quick-fix' solutions, especially with remote and rural residents often existing on lower incomes."

Last week, it was reported that a new £90 million fibre-optic network is being utilised by public services across the areas of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Over 1,000 sites across the regions will be linked up to the fibre optic network, including schools, colleges and the fire service.
