Warning of data centre shortages in UK - Networking Industry News

Warning of data centre shortages in UK - Networking Industry NewsAmbitions for cloud computing may be stifled by a lack of storage capacity at the moment, a data centre expert has suggested.

With 82 per cent of enterprises considering using virtual machines in 2010 - according to a survey by Symantec - there will be pressure to meet an increased demand.

Alec Selvon-Bruce, an eco-solutions champion for Hitachi Data Systems, believes solutions need to be found to supply the capacity for cloud computing.

He said: "Even before the credit crunch it was looking a bit suspect as to whether we could service the supply. We're actually in flux about how we supply data centres to meet the needs of the UK."

Mr Selvon added that the outlook was similar around the world with demand growing by 40 per cent while supply only grew by six per cent

The increasing popularity of cloud computing was shown by the recent networking industry news concerning the government's intention to consolidate hundreds of data centres around this country into a dozen that will host services on the cloud.

It is expected to save £300 million a year, partly from a 75 per cent reduction in power and cooling requirements.
