The Welsh Assembly government has reached a landmark agreement to secure funding to enhance its broadband network.
While the European Commission's convergence funding is usually earmarked for innovation, under a new deal reached between Brussels and Cardiff, financial backing will be given to plans to bring fibre optic cable internet to some of the more remote parts of the country.
Announcing the news, the deputy first minister of the Welsh Assembly Government Ieuan Wyn Jones noted that the move will help bring rural homes and businesses online and benefit the national economy.
"It is vital that people in all parts of Wales gain access to a high-speed internet service, and it is essential that businesses are fully equipped with the right ICT infrastructure to compete successfully in a global market," he said.
At the same time, it has also been revealed that Didcot is to become one of 20 UK locations to benefit from the rollout of super-fast fibre-based broadband over the summer.
