Virtualisation 'paid dividends during the downturn'

Virtualisation 'paid dividends during the downturn'The ongoing economic downturn has pushed network equipment virtualisation to the fore, it has been claimed.

According to IT industry expert Cisco Systems, virtualisation enabled it to boost its computing power while slicing its budget.

However, Rebecca Jacoby, chief information officer and senior vice-president of Cisco Systems, said implementing a successful virtualisation plan is not possible without taking a rigorous architectural approach that focuses in results and return on investment.

She claimed that the latest technology, such as switches and power distribution units, does not guarantee success.

"By taking an overall architecture approach, we save a bunch of money just in cabling by using our Unified Fabric," said Jacoby.

However, earlier this year, Hewlett Packard's vice-president of infrastructure software and blades Jim Ganthier said that Cisco's unified computing system is not capable of everything the company promised it would be.

Mr Ganthier said Unified Fabric left a lot to be desired in terms of reliability and accessability.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19392662-ADNFCR
