Network virtualisation can provide companies with a variety of cost-saving efficiencies, it has been claimed.
According to vnunet.com's Dave Bailey, a number of large organisations are turning to virtualisation to make their data centres and desktop estates more cost effective.
Matt Storey, Lancaster University's systems technical coordinator for its information systems services, told the news provider: "We realised we were hitting our cooling and power capacity at one of our datacentres, and we started looking around for technology to counter this."
He added that the university implemented a network attached storage solution from Dell to counter the problem and began looking at further virtualisation systems that could help to reduce its carbon footprint.
The university conducted a trial using VMWare virtualisation software on standard servers mounted in server racks and data cabinets around the campus.
Mr Storey claimed the moves resulted in the simplification of Cat5 cable infrastructure.
According to Computer Weekly, virtualisation is making IT more flexible and cost effective.
