Virgin Media has selected 200 of its customers to trial its new 50Mbit broadband connection free of charge.
The broadband provider has upgraded its cabling network and it now incorporates the DOCSIS3 standard.
According to the firm, the move is a step towards meeting the UK's future networking and broadband requirements.
Following the customer trial in Warrington, the 50Mbits per second package will be added to Virgin's roster alongside its two, ten and 20Mbit XL packages by the end of 2009.
Warrington was picked because of the high proportion of XL broadband subscribers.
Virgin will supply all customers taking part in the trial with a new modem.
Meanwhile, Virgin Media is already offering 16Mbit ADSL broadband to existing customers, who can try the service for the first three months free of charge.
If they decide to stick with the broadband package then they will be charged £5 per month.
