The technical specification for USB 3.0 is set to be unveiled at a conference in San Jose, California, next week, it has been reported.
According to the Inquirer, the USB Implementers Forum will formally announce the new specs for the high-speed data transfer technology.
Hampered by political infighting, the new standard is expected to be ten times faster than the current USB 2.0 specification, allowing a 25GB file to be transferred in 70 seconds compared with 14 minutes for USB 2.0 and 9.3 hours for version 1.0.
The new specification will allow data to be transferred at 4.8GB per second, and other improvements are believed to include better power management and the use of optical cabling.
Meanwhile, researchers in Europe are developing the world's first optical firewall that is expected to reduce security bottlenecks as it will allow data to be analysed at speeds of up to 40 gigabits per second, reports Science Daily.
