The UK is still lagging behind other European countries in terms of fibre optic broadband uptake.
According to the latest FTTH Council Europe report on the issue, uptake of fibre optic internet connections has increased by 18 per cent in the six months from December 2008.
Sweden is the top European nation for next generation 100Mbps broadband, with more than ten per cent of its connections compromised of fibre optic leads.
The council believes 13 million people in Europe will have fibre optic broadband services by 2012.
However, the UK has not made it into the top ten.
FTTH Council Europe president Karel Helsen said: "Our ambitious programme of research is part of an ongoing effort to demonstrate that FTTH is a sustainable technology."
According to Swiss network equipment manufacturer and cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari, Europe is now ready for the widespread uptake of fibre optic internet connections.
