If the UK is to stay on top of the international broadband league tables it must overhaul its data centre infrastructure, it has been claimed.
According to Alex Rabbetts, managing director of data centre specialist Migration Solutions, unless the government takes action broadband speeds will suffer as server cabinets fill up.
He said: "Unless there is concerted action, London will run out of data centre capacity by 2012 and not be able to support the new broadband networks and services."
He added that emerging environmental regulations in the IT sector will make construction of new data centre facilities in the capital problematic and expensive leaving London with no spare server rack capacity.
"Data centres are an integral part of the broadband supply chain," he added.
SMA Financial has just completed an upgrade of its primary data centre in London, increasing capacity while maintaining optimum levels of security, the company claimed.
