UK broadband speeds 'not an issue' - Networking Industry News

UK broadband speeds 'not an issue' - Networking Industry NewsBritain is not missing out despite being ranked 26th in the world in terms of its provision of fibre opticnetwork cables.

This is according to editor of broadband comparison website Broadband Genie Chris Marling, who was speaking after the publication of a new study by Akamai on global broadband speeds.

Mr Marling said it didn't matter that the UK does not have speeds of 14Mbps, with only a very small number of technology companies requiring the super-fast speeds.

"Slower speeds won't affect you until we start seeing practical applications for these high speed lines, such as 3D TV," he explained.

"Rural customers haven't got much to look forward to unless they live in a forward-thinking county such as Cornwall, which is ignoring a stumbling government and looking for its own solution via EU funding."

The broadband expert went on to say that Britain has seen some "fantastic developments" including Virgin Media's 50Mbps half-fibre service and BT's 40Mbps product.

A new fund was recently announced by the government, with proceeds going towards the guarantee that fibre optic broadband will be available to 90 per cent of the UK by 2017.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19562027-ADNFCR
