The average speed for downloading in the UK has increased since the beginning of the year, says a new report.
Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom found that the average download speed for a broadband subscriber is 4.1 megabits per second (Mps).
According to the regulator's research, most customers are happy with the speed of their connection.
However, just over a quarter said that they had expected quicker downloads when they first signed-up with their internet service provider (ISP).
Around ten per cent of those on a package offering "up to 8Mps" got speeds over 6Mps, said Ofcom.
Nearly one in five of these customers experienced speeds of less than 2Mps through their ethernet cables.
The ISP Association (ISPA) responded to the report saying that the research had failed to include many smaller service providers.
An earlier study by Ofcom released in January had found that the average broadband speeds were 3.6 Mps.
While "sufficient" for many applications, the regulator said that speeds could be variable and were slowest between 17:00 and 18:00 BST.
