The broadband market in the UK is not ready for 100Mbit download speeds, it has been claimed.
According to Quintain Estates, which offers residents at its Wembley City development 32Mbit broadband with the option to top up their download speed to 100Mbit for 30 minutes at a cost of £1, the country is not ready.
James Saunders, Quintain's managing director of commercial ventures, said: "The market's not really geared up yet for 100Mbit in a residential context."
He added that a lot of servers are tuned to the market norm of between four and eight megabits per second.
"What we can't control is the speed that other people can serve content that you can download from their servers," Mr Saunders said.
Virgin Media is already set to pilot 200Mbit broadband in 100 homes in Kent.
The trial, which makes use of high bandwidth fibre optic cables, is expected to last for six months.
