Tesco virtualises data centre infrastructure - Networking Industry News

Tesco virtualises data centre infrastructure - Networking Industry News Britain's leading supermarket firm Tesco has continued its pursuit of increased virtualisation as it aims to slash operating costs.

The company has reduced the amount of network equipment at its Wintel server estate – reducing power consumption and freeing up floor space in the facility.

According to an independent audit of Tesco's data centres, carried out last year, its network equipment was responsible for 30 per cent of total power consumption.

However, after removing server racks and server cabinets and virtualising two-thirds of its Windows servers, the company has reduced that value to ten per cent.

The company's IT service manager Nigel Chubb told CBR: "It called for a leap of faith, but we are very pleased with what we have achieved with virtualisation."

Earlier this year, Tesco introduced flywheel into one of its data centres – which is used to store electricity to power servers in an emergency.

It was part of a move to improve energy efficiency and cut costs.ADNFCR-1186-ID-19227964-ADNFCR
