Tesco uses a flywheel in data centre - Networking Industry News

Tesco uses a flywheel in data centre - Networking Industry NewsTesco is using technology from the industrial revolution to protect against power outages at its data centre sites.

A flywheel has been installed at the supermarket chains data centre which is used to store electricity for powering servers in an emergency.

The firm claims the move is part of its environmentally-friendly drive to reduce power consumption across its network.

It is part of a range of measures Tesco is implementing in its ten-year power consumption blueprint, which also includes an increasing amount of virtualisation.

Nick Folkes, IT director at Tesco, said: "Last year, we realised our electricity costs were going through the roof. We needed to do something radical.

"We had to tackle energy waste on our Intel servers," he added.

Tesco has also implemented a new cooling system which rids its data centre of the hot air trapped between serve racks and server cabinets.

Meanwhile Tesco is rethinking its recycling rewards policy because some customers have been exploiting a loophole in the scheme.
