Around four in ten UK homes, as well as tens of thousands of businesses, are to benefit from super-fast broadband in time for the 2012 Olympics, it has been announced.
Just recently, the government announced that it intends to ensure that every Briton is able to enjoy network connection speeds of at least 2 Megabits per second (Mbps) by 2012, with superfast connections intended for 90 per cent of people five years later.
Now, BT has announced that it intends to rollout a new broadband network offering speeds of up to 100 Mbps in time for the start of the London Games, with the £1.5 billion project reported to be ahead of schedule at the moment.
"Given the progress we're making, four million homes will have access to fibre by the end of next year," the telecoms firm's chief executive Ian Livingstone said.
"2012 will be an important year for the UK given the Olympics and so I'm keen we provide ten million homes with access to fibre by the time the Games begin."
Earlier this month, BT and Cisco announced a new unified communications partnership, with the two firms to work together to roll out a global vision for cloud computing.
