Supercomputer firm SGI, which was recently bought by Rackable Systems, has expanded its high-performance server market offering.
The company, which has just launched the server cabinet mountable CloudRack X2, claims the new device is a "scalable workgroup cluster" and expands on the company's C2 system introduced at the end of last year.
According to the Register, the new X2 weaves together both new and old technology including the C2's two-socket x64 server boards and low-powered MicroSlice compute trays.
The CloudRack line is now available in 23U and 46U server rack versions, both of which use Intel's Xeon 5500 processors.
"Having all of the power and cooling in the chassis instead of on each server increases the overall efficiency of the baby rack," the Register stated.
Adding: "[Disc drives] can be cooled with their own dedicated fans."
Earlier this year, Rackable Systems chief of European operations Rod Evans claimed that there is no such thing as a totally green data centre.
