Server room monitoring essential to cut energy use - Data and Server Racks

Server room monitoring essential to cut energy use - Data and Server RacksServer room monitoring is the first step for companies looking to reduce overall energy use in their data centres.

This is the view of Clemens Pfeiffer, founder of Power Assure, who said it is important to start with a baseline.

He explained that it is impossible to manage something that hasn't been measured first.

Baseline measurements of power consumption from end to end in the data centre should therefore be taken.

He explained that there are a number of server room monitoring solutions available, many of which require no special installation or extra wires.

"Some solutions also measure environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity and airflow, throughout the data centre," he remarked.

Mr Pfeiffer's comments come after research from IT analyst Gartner showed that energy-related costs account for around 12 per cent of overall data centre expenditure.

They are also the fastest rising costs in the data centre, the study revealed.
