Global server revenues have fallen by almost a third in the past year, racking up just $9.8 billion in sales during the second quarter of 2009, it has been claimed.
According to new research by industry analysts IDC, this marks the fourth consecutive quarter that global revenue for the network equipment has declined.
Meanwhile, the number of server shipments fell by 30.4 per cent between the second quarter of this year and the same period in 2008.
"Over the past four quarters, the worldwide server market has experienced significant revenue deceleration in all geographic regions," IDC's Matt Eeastwood, group vice-president of Enterprise Platforms, said.
He added: "Fewer servers have been shipped over the past four quarters
than at any time since 2005."
Earlier this year, IDC's programme manager of European infrastructure software, said that IT firms should be wary of cutting mission critical IT spending during the downturn as it make have a detrimental effect in the long term.
