Power Assure has unveiled a new metric that will allow companies to measure the energy-efficiency of each server rack in their data centres.
The new server performance standard, UL 2640, will be launched by Underwriters Laboratories, an electronics certification and testing group, and is based on Power Assure's PAR4 technology.
Companies will be able to measure server power consumption from a variety of standing points, including monitoring idle power, peak power, total utilisation power and transactions-per-watt.
Power Assure reports that Intel, Dell and Cisco have been working on incorporating PAR4 technology within their systems.
Underwriter Laboratories will assign a UL 2640 rating to each new server it tests for safety.
Last week Hamish Macarthur, chief executive and founder of Macarthur Stroud International, said that energy-efficiency was becoming a core concern of data centres
"Energy saving is an issue; it is part of the ongoing costs of every company," he explained.
